The Planning Process

In the spring of 2016, Friends School began the strategic planning process that culminated in the development of Friends Connects, which was approved by the Friends School board of Trustees in September 2017. Working with San Francisco-based Leadership+Design Educational Consultants, the Board’s Strategic Planning Task Force (composed of faculty, administrators, and trustees) employed a Design Thinking approach to the process; one that emphasized broad participation, extensive field work, input from end-users, prototyping and iteration. Through interviews, surveys, focus groups, and community work sessions, more than 300 members of the Friends’ community contributed to this endeavor. Friends Connects will serve as a guiding statement for the work of the School moving forward.  The School aims to reinforce and build upon our 233-year tradition of educational excellence within the context of the unique opportunities and challenges of modern life.  Friends Connects will allow us to grow and adapt as our knowledge and understanding of the needs of our community evolve.

In the fall of 2017, we have entered Stage Two of this process. Groups of community members are coming together to develop initiatives for each of our four major goals.  Employees, students, families, trustees, alumni, and friends of the School are called upon to contribute to this process. As you browse this site, you will see both initiatives and guiding questions.  Initiatives are happening  across campus in real time.  The Guiding questions will inform the work of our goal groups and help uncover initiatives and programs that will support our community in meaningful ways.
